On Track
On Track celebrates youth making healthy lifestyle choices, by empowering them with the information and experience necessary to further their positive leadership roles within their community. On Track is a peer-to-peer educational program designed to honour and motivate youth, encourage them to set goals, and stay On Track by staying drug free.
About on Track?
This highly effective workshop gives participants the necessary tools to bring successful peer-to-peer mentoring back to the schools. Each year, 40+ high school students from across B.C. are nominated to engage in an exciting one-day workshop with volunteer officers of the Vancouver Police Department. In 2011, Odd Squad was proud to have Surrey Safe Schools sponsor two students from a northern community to support ongoing growth of the On Track program.
Your School Liaison Officer will play a significant role as the main liaison between your school, the nominees and Surrey Safe Schools/Odd Squad. We aim to establish a long-lasting relationship between the students and the VPD officers so as to reinforce strong values for inter-communication, the power of positive choice and encouragement for achievement on a regular basis.
On Track is an incredible educational experience that arms participants with the right tools and real knowledge to return to their communities and spread the word about leading a healthy lifestyle.
Why do On Track?
High school is a life-stage that offers tremendous opportunities and tremendous challenges. Today’s youth are continually tempted with life-altering choices that have the potential to lead them down the miserable path of drug use, criminality, and other high-risk behaviours.
This one-of-a-kind drug-prevention workshop exposes participants to the harsh realities of drug use. We know that prevention and education are keys to keeping youth On Track. One major element in youth education is what kids see, hear, and learn from their peers.
With a need for more Drug Education Programs targeted at youth, On Track is exceptional learning with its hands-on approach. Youth are engaged with reality-based resources that promote discipline, motivation, and awareness-the bedrock for successful role modeling. Kids walk away with a positive focus for a healthy future.
How On Track works
On Track exposes participants to the grim realities of drug abuse- not through stale classroom lectures, but through interactive training sessions with serving VPD police officers and from hearing real-life stories from street-entrenched drug addicts. Students come away equipped with a lifelong lesson enabling them to mentor their peers on an ‘I’ve seen it first-hand’ basis.
- A diverse full-day interactive workshop in downtown Vancouver
- A drug-prevention presentation to fellow students at school
- A funfilled evening gala where participants will be honoured as Odd Squad Youth Community Ambassadors
On completion of the program, students become Community Ambassadors equipped to mentor their peers about the value of choice and the consequence of experimentation with drugs and illegal activity. Participants feel good about themselves, they feel more confident to make good choices and they become empowered to support their schoolmates in making good choices.
