Handcuffing Tips

f) Swapping Cuffs

If handcuffs need to be switched (as can happen in prisoner exchanges), put the replacement cuffs on as not to obstruct the key holes of the cuffs being removed (or use a second officer with good control and positioning to retain custody of him when the cuffs are being swapped out).

If handcuffs need to be switched (as can happen in prisoner exchanges), simply slide a second pair on so that the cuff holes face of replaced cuffs are accessible (or use a second officer with good control and positioning to retain custody of him when the cuffs are being swapped out).

Be sure to not block the lock holes when adding your handcuffs.

If both locks are facing in the same direction, then apply your replacing cuffs on the other side as to not block access to the set that needs replacing.

If the one of the locks are facing in opposite direction, then perhaps the chain can be crossed to achieve the desired (unblocking) positioning.

PRO TIP: Mark your cuffs so that you can reclaim them from the jail and maintain them properly.
