The Downtown Eastside: This is a high shot of the 100 to 300 blocks of East Hastings St. which is prime drug dealing and drug using territory. It is a boulevard of broken dreams and home to many lost youth.
A needs assessment has been completed and a trailer is currently being worked on for this documentary of several Native youth who found themselves trapped in the Downtown Eastside. How did they get there? What social problems compelled them to make this move to Canada’s poorest neighbourhood by postal code? What are their lives like? How will they be received when they return to their home villages? How are drug influencing this society? 'STOLEN LIVES' (View Trailer)- (Not Available: currently in production)
Bad Accident: The blood stains are new; the convertible look is also new. The tragedies behind car chases and impaired driving are not.
In 2005, over 35,000 vehicles were stolen in British Columbia at a cost of over $160,000,000. But the true cost is not measured in dollars or in the number of stolen cars, it is measured in stolen lives. Last year in BC 128 people were injured and 12 people were killed in collisions involving stolen cars. These tragedies were all preventable. Current auto theft prevention education is aimed only at the owners of vehicles. Drivers constantly hear prevention messages to lock their doors, use an anti-theft device, and remove valuables. But nothing is being done to educate young people on the consequences of auto theft, its linkage to drug addiction, and the lives that are stolen as a result. Stolen Lives is an auto theft prevention documentary aimed at youth which will be completed in the spring of 2007. This Odd Squad initiative is being produced in partnership with the Autoplan Brokers of BC, ICBC, IMPACT, and with the support of the Government of British Columbia. ‘ON THE EDGE OF METH’ - (Not Available: currently in production)
Meth Shards: Crystal meth is made from a mixture of corrosive and caustic chemicals like red phosphorous (match heads) and acetone (nail polish remover). Imagine what these poisons can do to the brain.
This video will deal with the rising crisis of crystal meth addiction. First-hand accounts of crystal methamphetamine survivors will spell out the many dangers of this highly addictive and destructive drug (2006 expected release date). ‘TEARS FOR APRIL: BEYOND THE BLUE LENS’
April, Age 24: April faces a life in Hell as she struggles to rid herself of the drug addiction that plagued her until the day she was murdered. She was losing her looks as fast as her teeth were dropping out of her mouth yet she chose to share her pain with Odd Squad in order to help convince kids not to use drugs.
'Beyond The Blue Lens' will destroy the myth that drug abuse affects just the user as life and death unfolds in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. The Odd Squad continue to film the subjects from 'Through a Blue Lens' (1999). Their lives (and deaths) will be chronicled in the upcoming documentary (release date Spring 2007) |
